# Working with independent asset managers

> Independent asset managers are clients of the bank. Bordier runs a specialist desk for them, with custody, trading, research and reporting behind their mandates.

Independent asset managers are clients of the bank. Bordier runs a specialist desk for them inside its client advisory group, and supplies the custody, trading, research and reporting that sit behind their client mandates.

## What an independent asset manager is

An independent asset manager, or IAM, also called an external asset manager, is not a bank. It advises clients and manages their portfolios, and it depends on a bank for custody, trading infrastructure and products. The client's assets are held at the bank, and the manager holds the mandate to manage them.

Clients choose an independent asset manager primarily for the personal relationship and for the independence of the advice. The model emphasises transparency, ethics and long-term alignment.

## What Bordier provides

A dedicated team, direct access to the bank's trading room, direct access to its research teams and analysts, and access to specialists across family services, advisory and financial planning. The technology covers trading, consolidation, financial research and secure e-services.

Two platforms serve the relationship. **IAM in touch** is built for the manager, giving secure direct access, order submission, portfolio consultation and performance analysis, personalised client reporting, asset consolidation and electronic filing. **b in touch** serves the manager's own clients.

## Scale and consolidation in the sector

The cost of compliance, among other pressures, makes size increasingly important for independent asset managers, and the sector is consolidating as firms reach critical size. Bordier works alongside managers on the regulatory changes that raise their risk and compliance costs.
