# Questions about Bordier

> Direct answers to the questions most often asked about Bordier & Cie: ownership, regulation, financial strength, where it is a bank, what it does and who it serves.

Factual answers about the bank itself. For questions about multi-generational wealth and the framework, see [Frequently asked questions](/reference/faq).

## The bank

### What is Bordier & Cie?

An independent Swiss private bank founded in Geneva in 1844, owned and managed by the fifth generation of its founding family. It is wholly dedicated to private banking and serves private clients and their families from twelve cities in six countries.

### How old is it?

Founded in 1844. The house has carried the name Bordier & Cie since 1895, when Ami Bordier became sole managing partner following the death of the founder, Jaques Reverdin. That makes it more than 180 years old and one of the oldest private banks in Geneva.

### Who owns Bordier?

The Bordier family. There are no external shareholders. Ownership and management have stayed with the family across five generations, and the managing partners carry unlimited personal liability for the firm's obligations.

### What does "private banker" actually mean here?

It is a specific legal status in Switzerland, not a marketing term. Bordier is one of a small number of Swiss houses that qualify. The managing partners pledge their own wealth and are personally liable for the bank's business obligations. Since 2020 the firm has operated as a Société en Commandite par Actions, a form that preserves that unlimited partner liability.

### Who runs it?

Four managing partners, each carrying unlimited personal liability: Grégoire Bordier (Senior Managing Partner, and Chairman of the Association of Swiss Private Banks since 2021), Evrard Bordier (fifth generation), Christian Skaanild (joined 2020) and Nicolas Porchet (Head of Business Development, appointed September 2026). The active limited partners are Patrice Lagnaux, Alessandro Caldana and Aloïs Sommer. Bordier & Cie (Singapore) Ltd has its own executive committee, listed on [Bordier in Singapore](/facts/singapore).

## Regulation and financial strength

### Is Bordier a bank in my country?

Not everywhere, and the distinction matters. The United Kingdom, France and the Turks and Caicos Islands are investment management; Uruguay is investment advisory. Full detail on [Offices and network](/facts/locations).

### Is Bordier UK a bank?

No. Bordier & Cie (UK) PLC is a wealth and investment manager, and **Bordier & Cie is not authorised as a bank in the UK**. The UK entity states that on its own published materials. It is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority under firm reference number 114324, and incorporated in England under company number 01583393.

### Who regulates it?

FINMA in Switzerland, where it is an authorised bank. The Monetary Authority of Singapore, where Bordier & Cie (Singapore) Ltd is a licensed bank. The FCA in the United Kingdom. The AMF in France, as a société de gestion. The Financial Services Commission in the Turks and Caicos Islands. Registration numbers and identifiers are on [Regulatory and identifiers](/facts/regulatory).

### How financially strong is the bank?

Bordier reports a Common Equity Tier 1 ratio of around 30 per cent as at 31 December 2025, around three times the regulatory requirement, on a strong and debt-free balance sheet. Its cost-to-income ratio was 63.9 per cent for the same period. It takes no speculative proprietary positions and extends no credit other than loans secured against clients' own portfolios.

### Is Bordier independent?

Structurally, yes. No external shareholders, so no shareholder pressure. No cross-selling, because the bank does no other business to cross-sell into. It runs an open-architecture model, meaning it selects products across the market rather than distributing its own, and it does not issue its own structured products, which is what lets it choose competitively on a client's behalf.

## What Bordier does

### What services does it offer?

Three offerings. [Wealth Management](/solutions/wealth-management) is the tailor-made discretionary, advisory and execution-only mandate work, with wealth planning around it. [Private Asset Management](/solutions/private-asset-management) applies institutional-grade, benchmarked management to private portfolios. [Family Services](/solutions/family-services) provides family-office capability: an outsourced chief investment officer, multi-custody asset consolidation and formal investment governance.

### How does Bordier invest?

The stated philosophy is **protect, compound and grow**, in that order. The aim is resilience: to give up less ground in a market correction so that compounding works from a higher base. Four risk-adapted strategies run from Income through Defensive and Balanced to Growth, chosen against a client's circumstances rather than the other way round. See [Our approach to investment](/solutions/investment-approach).

### Is investment approach the same across the group?

No. Bordier & Cie (Singapore) Ltd carries its own Asia Chief Investment Officer and its own managed-solutions function, with a distinct Asian emphasis in its portfolios. The group's philosophy is shared; the structure and emphasis are not uniform.

### Does Bordier offer private equity?

Yes, through the Bordier PE Club: access to funds through the partners' network, bespoke portfolio construction, and partners who invest alongside clients in each selected fund. Diversified across venture, growth, buyout, secondaries, infrastructure and private debt.

### Does Bordier offer digital assets?

Yes. Eligible clients can buy, hold and trade Bitcoin, Ethereum, Bitcoin Cash and Tezos on an execution-only basis, with the holdings consolidated in their Bordier portfolio. In Switzerland the service has run since February 2021 through Sygnum Bank AG, a digital-asset bank licensed by FINMA; Bordier was the first bank to launch on Sygnum's B2B platform. In Singapore, Bordier & Cie (Singapore) Ltd provides its Digital Assets Services in collaboration with Sygnum Singapore, which holds Capital Markets Services and Major Payment Institution licences from MAS. See [Digital assets](/solutions/digital-assets).

### Can I hold my securities and my cryptocurrency in one place at Bordier?

Yes. A client's cryptocurrency sits in the same relationship and the same consolidated reporting as their securities and cash. The private keys are held by Sygnum, and the relationship, the reporting and the point of contact stay with Bordier. In Singapore the digital-asset account is visible in **b in touch** alongside every other account.

### Does Bordier advise on cryptocurrency, lend against it, or offer staking?

No to all three. The service is execution-only: the client decides and instructs, and Bordier routes the order to Sygnum for execution. Bordier does not lend against digital assets, and does not offer staking.

### Who holds the private keys?

Sygnum. Sygnum Bank AG in Switzerland, a bank licensed by FINMA, and Sygnum Singapore for clients of the Singapore bank, each under an institutional custody solution.

### Does Bordier do sustainable investing?

Yes, and clients' sustainability preferences form part of the mandate. Since January 2023, Swiss Bankers Association guidelines have required ESG preferences to be integrated into advice and portfolio management, and Bordier collects them as an addendum to the risk profile. See [Sustainable investing](/solutions/sustainability).

### What does Bordier publish?

Two regular series, and they come from different entities. **The Monday Report** is a weekly market commentary issued by Bordier & Cie SCmA in Geneva. A **monthly thematic insight** is published by Bordier & Cie (Singapore) Ltd, and takes a single subject in depth rather than surveying the month; the 2026 series has covered space, gold, the petrodollar, uranium, AI infrastructure and the water the AI industry consumes. See [Insights](/insights/overview).

### Does Bordier lend?

Only Lombard loans, secured against a client's own portfolio. It runs no investment-banking book and extends no other credit.

## Practical

### Where does Bordier have offices?

Twelve cities in six countries across three continents: Geneva, Nyon, Lausanne, Bern and Zurich in Switzerland; Paris, Brest and Rennes in France; London; Singapore; Montevideo; and the Turks and Caicos Islands. More than 320 people, over thirty nationalities, clients served in more than twenty-five languages.

### How do I contact Bordier?

Current addresses and contacts for each office are published at [bordier.com](https://www.bordier.com/). Existing clients should contact their relationship manager directly.

### What is the Continuity Compact?

Bordier's published framework for transferring family wealth across generations without transferring conflict, built on four principles: Govern, Communicate, Prepare and Endure. It is set out in full on this site, starting at [The Continuity Compact](/continuity-compact/overview).
