# Investment selection

> The four selection engines behind a Bordier portfolio, in equities, fixed income and funds, and the test each one applies.

Selection is where the philosophy meets an individual security or fund. Bordier runs four engines, and they do not share a test.

| Engine | Universe | The test |
| - | - | - |
| **Equities, core** | The S\&P 500 and the STOXX Europe 600, 1,100 companies | Business quality first, then price against a discounted cash flow model |
| **Equities, satellite** | The remainder of that universe, including regulated sectors, banks, deep cyclicals and special situations | Relative valuation against peers, and whether a discount or premium is warranted |
| **Fixed income** | The main fixed-income benchmarks, restricted to public companies and liquid bonds | Bottom-up relative value, independent of agency ratings |
| **Funds** | External managers, plus Bordier's own funds | Alignment with capital preservation and downside-risk control |

## Equities

The four-stage funnel that narrows 1,100 companies to 30 to 40, and the criteria applied at each stage, are set out on [Private Asset Management](/solutions/private-asset-management). Two features of it decide what it can do.

The screen is **sector-agnostic**, so a company is neither admitted nor excluded because of the sector it belongs to. And the discounted cash flow model that determines fair value is **standardised, and applied uniformly across sectors**.

The result is reviewed on a continuing price-to-fair-value basis rather than at fixed intervals, and the whole process repeats in order to refresh the eligible universe. The Core Holdings portfolio is available in US dollars, Swiss francs, euros and sterling.

## Fixed income

Two separate pieces of work, done by the same team. Strategy establishes where the economic cycle stands and what that implies for rates and spreads. Selection screens for value bond by bond, across four currencies and across investment grade, high yield and hybrids, on a proprietary process that is deliberately **independent of agency ratings**. Both are set out on [Investment solutions](/solutions/investment-solutions).

## Funds

Where a portfolio is built from funds rather than single lines, fund selection carries the whole allocation, so the due diligence is the control.

Bordier's own funds are managed on the same approach as the largest portfolios it runs, drawing on the in-house research department of economists, equity analysts and credit analysts.
