# What kind of bank Bordier is

> Bordier is an independent, family owned Swiss private bank whose partners carry unlimited personal liability for the bank's commitments.

Bordier & Cie is an independent private bank. It is owned by the family that runs it, it is dedicated to private banking, and its partners are personally liable for what the bank owes. Most of what follows about how the bank works follows from those three facts.

## The partnership is the structure

**Unlimited liability partnership: the Partners bear personal liability for the Bank's commitments.** That is not a description of culture. It is the legal form the house has kept since it was founded in 1844, and it means the downside of a bad decision reaches the partners' own assets.

The bank was established in Geneva in 1844 and is managed by the fifth generation of the Bordier family. There are no external shareholders and no parent group above it, so there is no reporting quarter and no group priority sitting above the private bank.

## Where that places Bordier

Bordier places itself among the **boutique private banks**. Banks of this kind sit between a family office and the larger pure-play private banks. They are owned by families or by partners, they treat private banking as their core business rather than one division among several, and they work mainly with families and family offices. Portfolios are built individually, and a partner or a senior banker is usually involved directly.

The trade-offs are real and structural. Scale is limited, brand visibility is lower, and the product shelf is narrower.

## Scale and reach

Bordier has offices in Switzerland, the United Kingdom, France, Uruguay, Turks and Caicos, and Singapore. The Singapore bank was established in 2011 and is the group's hub for Asia Pacific. The house is entrepreneurial in outlook and experienced in working with multigenerational families.

A partnership with Sygnum, a licensed digital-asset bank, gives clients regulated, execution-only access to cryptocurrencies, in Switzerland since 2021 and in Singapore since 2023, with the holdings consolidated alongside the rest of their portfolio.
